Maine Black Bears get Victory over Merrimack College

Maine Black Bears #13 Redshirt Freshman QB Derek Robertson finished with 11-for-23 for 141 yards and 1 TD in the Black Bears 31-26 victory over Merrimack College Warriors in FCS Football action Saturday, September 18th

Alfond Stadium, Orono ME- The Black Bears would return home to the Alfond Stadium after falling to 0-2 with the losses against Delaware and to James Madison. They would take on the Merrimack College Warriors who were coming off a pair of victories over St. Anselm and Holy Cross. The Black Bears were led by Redshirt Freshman Derek Robertson who was taking over for the injured Joe Fagnano who was hurt in their game with James Madison. Robertson would finish 11 for 23 for 141 yards and 1 TD in his home debut to help the Black Bears get the 31-26 victory. 

The Black Bears would find the end zone with a Elija Barnwell 2 yard rushing TD and a Jonny Messina field goal to give the Black Bears an early 10-0 lead with 4:32 left in the first quarter. Merrimack would answer midway into the second quarter as Warriors Victor Dawson would find the end zone followed by Jacari Carter catch from Westin Elliot 13 yards out for the TD to tie the Black Bears at 13 apiece. Messina would kick a 34 yard FG followed by a Brock TD run for 4 yards into the back of the end zone to give the Black Bears the 20-13 lead. Warriors would answer back with another Carter catch from Westin again give the Black Bears would have  the edge at 22-20 heading into the half. Maine would also block two FG and returned them for extra points along with causing the Warriors to turn the ball over 4 times. This would be the third time a team has had two returns for points by the defense after blocking the FG kick in FCS history starting back in 1989. 

The Black Bears would find the end zone again on a 51 yard TD Pass from Robertson to Brock to extend the Black Bears Lead to 29-20. Merrimack would keep it close though as T. Edmonds Jr would find the end zone on a 2 yard run keep the game close Maine would a few more points on the board to give them the 31-26 victory to improve to 1-2 while Merrimack would fall to 2-1. 

The Black Bears will return to action as they will travel to Northern Illinois Saturday September 25th.
