MDI Defeats Orono in 8-Man Football

Orono,ME –  Friday, September 17th the Orono Red Riots would host the MDI Trojans at Morse Field at Alfond Stadium on the University of Maine Campus in Small School 8-Man Football Action. The Trojans were coming off missing a week of action due to having to deal with Covid-19 concerns within the program.  The Trojans weren’t effected by it however, they were able to contribute for total of 303 yards for rushing as well as 75 yard punt return along with a 73 yard Kickoff return for a TD to give the Trojans the 60-20 victory.  

MDI would get on the board early with less than 50 seconds into the game as Aiden Grant would scamper into the end zone for a 12 yard TD run. After a forced punt by Orono High School with under 50 seconds left in the first quarter Spencer Laurendeau would find the end zone for a 8 yard run for a touchdown to give the Trojans the 12-0 lead heading into the second quarter. Orono would finally get on the board as Hayden Rollins would find the end zone for a 1 yard TD run as the Red Riots would go on a 8 minute drive prior to Rollins TD to cut the Trojans lead to 6 with the trojans leading 12-6. MDI would however, find the end zone again with 3:39 left in the first half Laurendeau would find the end zone on a 49 yard TD run followed by the 2 point conversion giving the Trojans the 20-6 lead. Laurendeau would find AJ Lozano for a 25 yard touchdown to give the Trojans 28-6 lead. To close out the first half Laurendeau would find the end zone again for 25 yard TD run. Starting the second half Laurendeau would pick up where he left off where Laurendeau would find the end zone for 25 yards out to extend the Trojans lead to 36-6 with less than 12 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. After the Red Riots were forced to punt MDI’s Jacob Shields would find the end zone on a 75 yard Punt Return to give the Trojans the 44-6 lead. Orono wouldn’t quit though Jack Brewer  would connect with Kase Walston with a 38 yard pass for a touchdown. The Red Riots would trail 44-13 with a little over 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

Following a 75 yard TD Kickoff Return by MDI’s Alex Gray  Orono High School’s Brewer would find the end zone following with a Walston extra point to get the score to 52-20 lead. To cap off the night to give the Trojans the victory was a 75 yard run by Brendan Graves. 

The Red Riots would fall to 0-3 while the Trojans would improve to 1-1. 

The Red Riots will look to get their first win as they host Morse Friday, September 24th at Morse Field at Alfond Stadium due to Orono High School’s field still being renovated. The Tojans will be heading to Millonocket to take on Stearns High School.
