Phoenix Defeat The Black Bears
Orono, ME – Saturday, October 9th The Black Bears played host to Elon Phoenix in CAA football action. After a slow start the Phoenix would get the 33-23 victory to improve to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the CAA. While the Maine Black Bears fall to 0-3 in conference and 1-4 overall.
The Phoenix would take the early lead as Davis Cheeks would find Donavon Williams for a 9 yard touchdown and a Skylar Davis xtra point to give the Phoenix the 7-0 lead with 8:08 left in the first qtr. Johnny Messina would put Maine on the board with a FG with 5:41 left in the first quarter.
The Phoenix would extend their lead as Cheeks would find Jaylan Thomas for a 30 yard TD to give the Phoenix the 13-3 lead. Bryson Daughtry would find the end zone after a pass from Cheeks with 2:41 left in the first half. Maine would find the end zone with :35 left to play in the first half as Derek Robertson would find Tight End Shawn Bowman for a 25 yard pass to cut the Phoenix lead to 9 at the half with the score being 19-10.
Starting the second half Cheeks would find the end zone to give the Phoenix the 26-10 lead. The Black Bears would answer right back as Trevin Ewing would get a 95 yard return for a touchdown followed by Zavier Scott would score on a 8 yard run for the touchdown to cut the Phoenix lead to 3 however the Phoenix would be to much at the end as they would get another touchdown as Mck. Witherspoon followed by a Sky. Davis xtra point to give the Phoenix the 10 point victory.
The Black Bears look to get their first conference victory as they host William & Mary Saturday, October 16th as they celebrate Homecoming Weekend. The Phoenix return to action as they host University of New Hampshire Saturday, October 15th.
